GVR hosts inaugural Bear Grylls Survival Academy » The first Bear Grylls Survival Academy was held at Glacier View Ranch last week. Twelve brave "victims" took part in the 24-hour survival training event. Students of the first class included members of the national and Colorado news media. Stories have been filed in the Denver Post, Huffington Post, and 5280 Magazine, among others.
The program's tag-line, "It may hurt a little," was attested to by those with sore muscles who will long remember the training. Participants learned fire-starting, water purification, foraging, shelter building, rappelling, and many other useful survival techniques. The academy offers training opportunities for both adults and families, with emphasis on bonding and connecting. For more information about upcoming training events, click here.
Newday helps HIV/AIDS victims in Africa » On June 13-15, Newday Christian SDA Church hosted its first-ever Do Good Feel Good event at Parker Days, the annual community festival for the town of Parker, Colo. Newday members interacted with local residents about Doing Good and Feeling Good by making a difference for people suffering from HIV/AIDS in Africa.
Residents were given the opportunity to sponsor one or more HIV/AIDS Caregiver Kits and to sign up for a Caregiver Kit assembly event that Newday will host in the fall. Caregiver Kits (through World Vision International) are filled with basic supplies to help improve and prolong the lives of children and families who are living with AIDS and HIV.
Each person who sponsored a caregiver kit chose a gift for themselves from an assortment of Rwandan handicrafts brought back from Newday’s recent trip to Rwanda. These handicrafts will serve as a reminder to those who sponsored a Caregiver Kit of the difference they made for someone suffering from HIV/AIDS in Africa.
The community response was generous, with several graciously sponsoring one or more Caregiver Kits and dozens signing up to learn more about the Caregiver Kit assembly event in the fall.
